Volume-to-Market-Cap: The Ratio That Exposes Wash-Traded Memecoins
A token's volume/market-cap ratio can reveal fake activity fast, but only if you read it against liquidity, holders, and price action together.
Why Volume Alone Lies
Every memecoin dashboard shoves volume in your face because volume looks like proof of life. It isn't. Volume is the easiest metric to fake, and on low-float tokens it's cheap to fake at scale. A wallet buying and selling to itself, or a small ring of wallets trading the same tokens back and forth, generates volume without generating any real demand.
The fix isn't to ignore volume. It's to normalize it. That's where volume-to-market-cap comes in.
The Ratio, Defined
Volume-to-market-cap (sometimes called the turnover ratio) is simply:
24h volume divided by market cap.
If a token has a $1M market cap and $1M in 24h volume, the ratio is 1.0. That means the entire float-equivalent turned over once in a day. A ratio of 0.1 means 10% turnover. A ratio of 5 means the token traded five times its own size in a day.
You can compute this yourself from any honest data source. On GMGN the numbers are laid out cleanly enough to do it in your head: https://gmgn.uk (mirror: https://gmgn.fr).
What High Turnover Actually Means
High turnover is not automatically bad. Real, organic memecoin mania can push turnover to 1.0 or higher during a genuine catalyst — a listing, a CTO, a viral moment. The problem is when turnover is high and nothing else lines up.
Red flags that stack with an inflated ratio:
- Volume dwarfs liquidity. If a token does $2M in volume on $40k of liquidity, that's not traders. That's a loop. Real volume needs depth to absorb it without nuking price.
- Price barely moves. Wash trading is designed to be price-neutral. If turnover is 3.0 and the chart is a flat line, question it hard.
- Holder count is frozen or falling. Real volume brings new wallets. Fake volume recycles the same ones.
- Trade sizes are uniform. Bots wash in identical increments. Human flow is messy.
- Volume spikes on a schedule. Round-the-clock even volume with no gaps is a machine signature, not a market.
What Low Turnover Can Hide
Low turnover isn't a green light either. A ratio near zero with a fat market cap often means the token is illiquid and held by a few wallets — the price is a number on a screen, not a market. You can't exit size without collapsing it. Distinguish "quiet because nobody cares" from "quiet because it's a closed loop of insiders."
Reading It In Context
Use the ratio as a filter, not a verdict. Step through it:
- Pull 24h volume and market cap. Compute the ratio.
- Compare volume to liquidity. Volume should be explainable by depth.
- Check holder growth and distribution over the same window.
- Look at price action. Volume without movement is suspicious.
- Cross-check with the token's age. Brand-new tokens have noisy ratios; give them time.

The Honest Bottom Line
Wash trading exists because volume is a marketing tool. The volume-to-market-cap ratio strips some of that disguise, but only if you refuse to read it in isolation. Memecoins are extremely high risk and most go to zero. A clean ratio does not make a token safe; it just means one specific lie isn't being told. Keep the rules in front of you, size like you expect to lose, and treat every number as a question rather than an answer.
