Volume-to-Market-Cap: The Ratio That Exposes Fake Memecoin Volume
Volume divided by market cap tells you how fast a coin's entire float is turning over — and wash traders can't hide from it.
Why Raw Volume Lies
Every memecoin chart shows you a volume number. Almost nobody asks what that number means relative to the size of the coin.
A token doing $2M in daily volume sounds alive. If its market cap is $40M, that's a 5% turnover. If its market cap is $400K, that same $2M means the entire float changed hands five times in a day. Those are completely different situations, and only one of them is usually real.
The tool that separates them is volume-to-market-cap ratio: 24h volume divided by market cap. It's crude, it's fast, and it catches more wash trading than any single indicator I've used.
What The Ratio Actually Measures
Think of it as turnover speed.
- Under 0.1 — quiet. Volume is a small fraction of the coin's size. Could be a dead chart, could be accumulation before a move.
- 0.1 to 0.5 — normal range for a token with genuine interest. Buyers and sellers are trading, not just bots cycling.
- 0.5 to 2.0 — hot. Real attention or real manipulation. This is where you have to look closer.
- Above 2.0 — the entire market cap is trading multiple times per day. On a small-cap memecoin, this is almost always a red flag, not a green one.
Here's the logic. For turnover to be that high, someone has to be on both sides of nearly every trade. Organic markets have friction — spread, slippage, hesitation. Wash traders don't. They buy and sell to themselves through wallet clusters to manufacture the appearance of liquidity.
The Wash Trading Signature
The pattern is consistent. You'll see a coin with:
- A small market cap, often under $1M
- Volume that dwarfs that cap — ratio north of 1.5, sometimes 5 or 10
- A price that barely moves despite all that "activity"
- Trade sizes that cluster around the same amounts, over and over
- A holder count that grows slowly while volume explodes
That last one matters. Real volume brings real holders. If volume is up 400% and unique holders are up 3%, you're watching a loop, not a market.
Wash traders do this for a few reasons: to farm trending algorithms, to hit volume thresholds that trigger alerts, to create the illusion of exit liquidity so real buyers feel safe entering. You are the exit liquidity in that scenario.
How To Check It In Under A Minute
Open the token on GMGN at https://gmgn.uk (mirror: https://gmgn.fr). Pull up the market cap and 24h volume. Divide. Then ask three questions:
- Does the ratio make sense for this coin's age and size?
- Is the holder count moving with the volume?
- Are the trades varied, or are the same sizes repeating?
If the ratio is screaming and the holders aren't following, walk. You don't need to prove wash trading happened. You just need to know the odds are against you.

Where The Ratio Fits In Your Process
This is not a standalone signal. It's a filter you run before you look at anything else.
A high ratio plus a clean holder curve plus varied trade sizes can be a genuinely explosive coin. A high ratio plus a flat holder count plus repetitive trade sizes is a trap with a chart attached. Same number, opposite meaning.
That's the whole point. Ratios don't tell you what to buy. They tell you when to slow down.
Most memecoins go to zero. The ones engineered specifically to look alive while going to zero are the ones this filter exists to catch.

The Takeaway
Volume is a claim. Volume-to-market-cap is a cross-examination.
Learn to divide two numbers and you'll skip more rugs than any paid group will ever save you from. Do your own research, size accordingly, and assume the chart is lying until the ratio says otherwise.
