Volume-to-Market-Cap Ratio: The Quickest Wash Trading Check in Memecoins

Volume divided by market cap exposes fake activity fast — here's how to read the number and what it can't tell you.

Why Volume Lies First

On a memecoin, volume is the easiest metric to fake and the first one a buyer sees. A token shows $3M "volume" on a $600K market cap and the chart looks alive. Nine times out of ten, that activity is a handful of wallets trading the same coins back and forth to manufacture the appearance of demand.

Volume-to-market-cap (V/MC) is the fastest sanity check you have. It is not a buy signal. It is a filter that tells you whether the activity deserves a second look or a hard pass.

The Ratio, Plain

Divide 24h volume by circulating market cap. That's it.

  • Under 0.5x — normal-to-quiet for an established memecoin. Not automatically dead, but nothing is happening.
  • 0.5x to 3x — the active band. Real tokens with real rotation live here. Still verify before touching.
  • 3x to 10x — elevated. Could be genuine virality or coordinated wash trading. This is where you do the work.
  • Above 10x — treat as a red flag until proven otherwise. A market cap that small should not be turning over ten times a day without a specific, verifiable reason.

A $200K cap doing $4M volume is 20x. Ask yourself who is paying fees to move that much size through a $200K pool, and why.

What Wash Trading Actually Looks Like

The ratio flags the symptom. These confirm it.

Wallet concentration. If ten wallets account for 60%+ of volume, you're watching a closed loop. Check holder distribution and top-trader breakdown before you trust anything.

Uniform trade sizes. Bot loops trade in near-identical amounts. Human markets are messy. Clean, repetitive sizing is a tell.

Volume without price movement. Real buying pressure moves price. If volume is exploding while price sits flat in a tight band, coins are changing hands between wallets that already agreed on the price.

Buys and sells in matched pairs. Volume that nets to roughly zero over hours means the same capital is cycling, not accumulating.

Fresh wallets, old behavior. Newly funded wallets that immediately trade in sync with each other. Funding trails matter more than trade history.

What the Ratio Cannot Tell You

V/MC does not distinguish organic from manufactured on its own. A token with a 15x ratio can be genuinely viral — a real narrative, a real catalyst, real new money. A token with a 1x ratio can still be a slow rug where insiders are quietly distributing into thin liquidity.

The ratio is a prioritization tool. It tells you where to spend your attention. It does not replace checking liquidity locks, mint authority, holder concentration, and dev wallet history. Those checks live in our metrics reference.

Building the Habit

Run the math before you run the chart. Three steps:

  1. Pull 24h volume and circulating market cap on GMGN at gmgn.uk (mirror: gmgn.fr).
  2. Divide. Note where it lands against the bands above.
  3. If it's above 3x, go straight to wallet concentration and trade-size analysis before anything else.

If you're watching several chains at once, our public groups are split by chain so you're not drowning in noise — BH GMGN SOLANA, BH GMGN BASE, BH GMGN BSC, and BH GMGN ROBINHOOD, plus the main chat. Volume and exit alerts across those chains run through the alert channels listed in the channel directory. One folder for all of it: t.me/addlist/1VUQZMhux_JhMzJk.

Volume spikes are also where most traps get set, so treat any alert as a prompt to check, not a reason to ape. Our rules cover the rest of the workflow.

The Uncomfortable Part

Most memecoins go to zero. That is the base rate, not the exception. Wash trading exists specifically because the ratio is easy to inflate and most people don't do the division.

Doing the division takes ten seconds. It won't make you right every time. It will keep you out of the obvious traps, and in this market, avoiding the obvious traps is most of the edge.

Nothing here is financial advice. No predictions, no guarantees — just math you can run yourself.
