The One Check That Catches 90% of Honeypots

Honeypots look like easy money until you try to sell. Here's the single GMGN metric that exposes them every time.

What a Honeypot Actually Is

A honeypot is a token contract that lets buyers in but blocks sellers. You see a chart ripping, buy in, watch your bag go green — then when you click sell, nothing happens. The transaction fails. The price keeps pumping as other victims pile in. By the time you realise you're trapped, the deployer has drained the liquidity and the chart goes to zero.

This isn't a glitch. It's a deliberate contract function, usually a hidden approve check or a transfer modifier that only allows the deployer's address or a whitelist to sell. The token looks completely normal on the surface — liquidity locked, supply burned, socials active. None of that matters if you can't exit.

The One Check That Works

Skip the contract audit. Skip the Telegram shill. There is one on-chain signal that catches nearly every honeypot before you buy:

Check if the token has ever registered a sell on a decentralised exchange.

On GMGN, open the token page and scroll to the Trades table. Look for a row where the side is "Sell." If you see zero sells — not a single one — that token is a honeypot until proven otherwise. A legitimate token, even a dead one, will have sells from early flippers, bots, or the dev themself. A token with buys only and no sells means the contract blocks exits.

This check catches the classic honeypot, the "tax trap" variant that charges 90%+ on sells (same effect), and the slow-rug where sells get throttled. All of them leave the same signature: buy transactions exist, sell transactions do not.

How to Read the Data Correctly

Open the token on GMGN. Click the Trades tab. You'll see a real-time list of swaps. The columns are: Time, Type (Buy/Sell), Amount, Price, Wallet. Filter or scroll back until you see at least one sell.

  • If you see sells: the contract allows exits. You still need to check liquidity and holder distribution, but the basic sell function works.
  • If you see only buys: do not buy. Walk away. The chart may look beautiful, the volume may be high, the narrative may be hot — none of it matters if you cannot sell.

One nuance: very fresh tokens (deployed < 2 minutes ago) may not have any trades at all. That's different. Wait 60 seconds. If the first trade is a buy and then no sells appear after 3-5 minutes, you are looking at a honeypot.

Why Most Traders Miss This

Most people check liquidity lock, renounced mint, or holder concentration. Those are important, but none of them detect a honeypot. A token can have locked liquidity for 10 years and still be a honeypot. The lock only protects against a liquidity pull — it does nothing to help you sell.

Another trap: some honeypots allow small sells to create fake confidence. A real honeypot hunter looks for a pattern of zero sells over any meaningful timeframe. If there are 500 buy transactions and 2 sells, both from the same wallet that bought 30 seconds earlier, that's not a real exit — that's the deployer testing their own contract.

The Limit of This Check

No single check catches everything. This sell-check is extremely effective against standard honeypots, but there are advanced variants:

  • Time-locked honeypots: The contract allows sells only after a certain block number or timestamp. For the first hour, sells show up fine. Then the switch flips and you are stuck. The only defence here is to wait long enough to see sells after the unlock time, or to check the contract code for a time-based modifier.
  • Whitelist honeypots: The deployer whitelists a few wallets to sell, usually themselves. The fake sells you see are from those whitelisted wallets. A pattern of sells only from the same 2-3 addresses is a red flag.

For those, you need to check the Holders tab on GMGN and see if any non-deployer wallets have successfully sold. If not, treat the token as a honeypot.

Practical Workflow

Before you buy any memecoin on Solana or EVM:

  1. Open the token on GMGN.
  2. Go to Trades.
  3. Look for at least one sell from a wallet that isn't the deployer.
  4. If you see none — skip the trade. No exceptions.

This takes 10 seconds and filters out most of the garbage. Combine it with holder concentration checks and liquidity verification, and you remove 90% of the risk from new token launches.

Final Word

Memecoins are zero-sum games. The house — deployers, insiders, snipers — has every advantage. Your only edge is information. The sell-check is the cheapest, fastest piece of information you can get. Use it every time.
