The 7-Point Pre-Buy Checklist That Stops You From Apeing Into a Rug

A repeatable pre-buy checklist is the cheapest risk tool you own. Here is how to build one you will actually follow.

Why You Keep Breaking Your Own Rules

Everyone has a plan until the chart starts moving. You told yourself you would not buy another fresh launch with no liquidity. Then the ticker showed up in five group chats at once and forty seconds later you were in.

That is not a discipline problem. It is a design problem. A rule you keep in your head competes with adrenaline, and adrenaline wins. A rule written down as a short checklist and run the same way every single time does not need willpower. It needs thirty seconds.

Most memecoins go to zero. That is not pessimism, it is the base rate. The entire point of a checklist is to make sure that when you lose, you lose small, on purpose, and know exactly why.

Build It Short, Make It Boring

A checklist you skip is worse than no checklist, because it gives you the feeling of diligence without the substance. Keep it to five to seven items. Each item should be a yes/no gate, not a vibe check. If an item requires you to feel something, rewrite it until it requires you to look at something.

Here is a structure that works across Solana, BSC, ETH, Base and Robinhood chains. Adapt the thresholds to your own risk tolerance, but never remove a gate entirely.

The Seven Gates

1. Can I explain the token in one sentence? Not the narrative, the mechanics. What is the contract, what does it do, who controls it. If you cannot say it out loud without hedging, you are buying a feeling.

2. Is the contract safe, mechanically? Mint authority, freeze authority, ownership, tax, and whether liquidity is locked or burned. On Solana this is the standard rug surface. On EVM chains it is the same idea with different labels. Check it before you check the chart.

3. Who holds the supply? If a handful of wallets sit on top of the distribution and those wallets are not the LP or a known burn address, you are exit liquidity. Concentration is the most common reason a chart looks fine right up until it does not. See the metrics breakdown at /v2/dyor/reference.html#metrics.

4. Is the volume real? Volume that arrives in bursts of identical size, or that spikes only when someone posts, is manufactured. Real interest leaves a messy, uneven footprint. This is where you look at the chart on GMGN, not just the number.

5. What is the invalidation? Before you buy, write down the exact thing that proves you wrong. A price level, a wallet selling, a dev move, a social collapse. If you cannot name it in advance, you will rationalize it in the moment.

6. What is my size, and what is my exit? Decide the position size and the first scale-out before entry. If the answer is "I'll figure it out," the answer is zero.

7. Am I buying the token or the alert? This is the gate that matters most and gets used least. If you cannot separate your thesis from the fact that a channel just posted it, you are not trading, you are following.

Actually Following It

A checklist only works if running it is easier than skipping it. Three habits make that happen.

  • Keep it in one place. A note on your phone, a pinned message to yourself. If it lives in three apps, it does not live anywhere.
  • Default to no. Every gate should fail closed. You do not need a reason to skip a trade. You need a reason to take one.
  • Log the misses. When you skip something and it runs, write down which gate stopped you. If the same gate keeps costing you, tune it. If it keeps saving you, keep it. This is the whole feedback loop.

Use the Community as a Second Set of Eyes

The checklist is yours, but you do not have to build the raw data alone. Our chain groups are where people compare notes on contracts, holders and setups in real time. The chat hub is BH GMGN CHAT, with chain-specific rooms at Solana, BSC, ETH, Base and Robinhood.

If you want automated flow to run your own gates against, the main alert channels are organized by chain and by signal type, from fresh buys and smart money through to near-graduation and socials. Browse the full directory at blackhat.finance/channels.html, and read the alert hygiene notes at /v2/dyor/reference.html#alerts.

When you are ready to check a chart and a contract side by side, do it on GMGN: gmgn.uk is the main portal, and gmgn.fr is the mirror.

The Point

A checklist does not make you a better trader overnight. It makes you a slower one, which is most of the improvement. It converts a hundred emotional decisions into one boring procedure you can repeat while everyone else is panicking.

Write your seven gates today. Run them on the next ten tokens you look at, including the ones you are sure about. Especially the ones you are sure about.

Most of these tokens will still go to zero. The difference is that it will be your decision, on your terms, at your size. That is the only edge anyone actually controls. Review the ground rules at /v2/dyor/reference.html#rules and start there.

This is education, not financial advice. Do your own research, and never risk more than you can lose completely.
