Position Sizing When Every Bet Can Go to Zero
Memecoins have no floor. If you size positions like they do, one bad week can erase months of work.
The Premise Nobody Wants to Accept
Start here: any memecoin position you take can go to zero. Not "might go down 80 percent." Not "could use a stop loss." Zero. Liquidity pulled, dev wallet dumped, contract exploited, narrative dried up overnight — the mechanics exist on every chain, and they fire more often than anyone posting charts wants to admit.
Most traders lose money not because they pick the wrong coins, but because they size the right and wrong coins the same way. Position sizing is the one lever you fully control. Price is not. Timing is not. The dev is not. Your size is yours.
Size for the Loser, Not the Winner
The instinct is to size for the upside: "if this does what that one did, I make X." Flip it. Size every position as if you already know it goes to zero, and ask whether that outcome is survivable.
If losing that entire position would change how you trade tomorrow — make you revenge-trade, stop taking setups, or start checking prices at 4am — it is too big. The correct size is the one where a total loss is boring.
A simple gut check before you buy:
- Write down the full dollar amount you are risking.
- Assume it hits zero this week.
- If that number stings but does not change your behavior, you sized correctly. If it makes your stomach drop, cut it.
The Math of Ruin
There is a reason pros obsess over this. Losses and gains are not symmetric. Lose 50 percent and you need 100 percent to get back to even. Lose 80 percent and you need 400 percent. Lose 100 percent and no gain on that position ever brings it back — it is gone.
That asymmetry means the size of your worst bet matters more than the size of your best one. A trader who wins five times on small positions and then loads one bag at half their account is one rug away from starting over. The portfolio does not care how right you were before; it cares what is left after the miss.
This is also why "all in on the one I believe in" is not conviction. It is a single point of failure dressed up as confidence.
Practical Rules That Survive Contact With Real Trading
You do not need a spreadsheet. You need a few rules you actually follow when you are excited.
- Cap the single bet. Decide the maximum percent of your trading capital any one memecoin can hold, and treat it as a hard ceiling, not a target. If you cannot state that number right now, you do not have a sizing system.
- Cap the theme. Five coins riding the same narrative are one bet wearing five tickers. When the narrative dies, they die together. Size the theme, not just the token.
- Size down as conviction drops. A coin you found on a hunch gets less than one you researched. Do not give a lottery ticket the same weight as a thesis.
- Pre-commit your exits before entry. Know where you take profit and where you admit you were wrong. Sizing without an exit plan just decides how much you lose slowly.
- Keep dry powder. Cash is a position. It lets you take the next setup instead of being trapped in the last one.

Sizing Is a Risk Decision, Not a Prediction
None of this predicts which coin runs. It never will. Sizing exists because you cannot know, and the market does not owe you a recovery. The goal is to stay in the game long enough that your good reads matter. A trader with modest edge and disciplined size outlasts a genius with none.
When you are sizing a position, the chart is on GMGN — gmgn.uk as the main portal, gmgn.fr as the mirror. Use it to check what you are actually buying into before you commit size, not after.
Where the Conversation Happens
If you want to pressure-test a sizing rule or talk through a bag before you size it, the community is at blackhat.finance. Chat lives in BH GMGN CHAT at @gmgnx_chat, with chain-specific rooms: SOL @gmgnx_solana, BSC @gmgnx_bsc, ROBINHOOD @gmgnx_robin, and BASE @gmgnx_base.
The main alert channels are organized by chain through the public channel directory, and you can load the whole set with the Telegram folder. Alerts are inputs, not instructions — you still decide your size. Our house rules apply, and they start with the same premise this article does.
The Bottom Line
Every memecoin can go to zero, so build a portfolio where that is survivable. Cap the single bet, cap the theme, size down without conviction, and keep cash ready. You will still take losses. The point is that no single loss takes you out of the game. That is not financial advice — it is the minimum standard for staying solvent while you learn.
