Position Sizing When Every Bet Can Go to Zero
Most memecoins die. Here's how to size positions so a string of zeros doesn't take you out of the game.
Start With the Honest Premise
Most memecoins go to zero. Not some. Most. If you are trading this corner of the market, the base case for any single token is that it ends worthless, and your job is not to pretend otherwise. Your job is to build a book that survives being right sometimes and wrong often.
That changes the math completely. You are not allocating capital to assets with a range of outcomes. You are allocating to lottery-like bets where the downside is total and the upside is unknown. Position sizing is the only lever you actually control.
The Rule That Keeps You Alive
Treat every position as if it can go to zero, because it can. Then ask one question before you click buy: if this entire position vanished tomorrow, would my week, my month, and my sleep be fine?
If the answer is no, the position is too big. Not because the token is bad, but because you are now trading your rent money against a coin with no floor. Sizing is risk management first, conviction second.
A practical frame:
- Cap any single bet at a small slice of your total trading capital. Small enough that five zeros in a row is annoying, not catastrophic.
- Cap total memecoin exposure separately. Even ten small positions add up to one big bet if they all correlate, and in a risk-off day, they do.
- Size by loss, not by hope. Decide what you are willing to lose, then buy that much. Do not buy first and hope the loss stays small.
Why "It's Only a Small Bag" Fails
Traders lie to themselves in two directions. They oversize the one they feel lucky about, and they stack so many small bags that the total exposure is the same as one reckless bet. Both are sizing errors wearing different clothes.
Run the numbers on a bad streak. If you put the same amount into ten tokens and eight go to zero, the two survivors have to carry the whole book. That is possible, but it is not a plan. The plan is that no single zero, and no cluster of zeros, forces you to stop trading or chase losses with money you cannot afford to lose.
Scaling In and Out Like You Mean It
Sizing is not just the first buy. It is every add and every exit.
- Add only when the thesis improves, not when the price drops and you feel pressure to average down. Averaging into a memecoin that is bleeding is how small bags become big losses.
- Take something off on the way up. Realized gains are the only gains. A position that triples and round-trips to zero taught you nothing except that you did not size your exits.
- Pre-commit your invalidation. Know what makes you wrong before you enter, and size so that being wrong is survivable.
If you want the stricter mechanical definitions behind these ideas, the reference material on metrics and rules is worth reading end to end: metrics and rules.
Alerts Are Inputs, Not Instructions
Our community runs a lot of alert channels across Solana, BSC, Base, and Robinhood. Those channels surface activity, they do not size your trades for you. A signal that a token is trending is not a signal to put a large position on it. The alert tells you something is happening. Your sizing framework decides whether you care.
If you want to talk through how other traders think about risk, the public groups are where that happens: BH GMGN CHAT at @gmgnx_chat, plus the chain groups @gmgnx_solana, @gmgnx_bsc, @gmgnx_robin, @gmgnx_eth, and @gmgnx_base. The full directory lives at blackhat.finance/channels.html.
When you do want to look at a chart or check a token before sizing, do it on GMGN: gmgn.uk is the default, and gmgn.fr is the mirror.
The Only Scoreboard That Matters
You will not remember the trade you skipped. You will remember the one that took out a month of progress. Position sizing is boring by design, and boring is what keeps you in the game long enough to catch the few tokens that actually run.
Assume zero. Size like it. Then let the winners surprise you instead of letting the losers end you.
