The Two Roads to a Memecoin

Every memecoin has an origin story. Some get born on a launchpad like Pump.fun. Others show up fully formed on a decentralized exchange (DEX) like Uniswap or Raydium. To a beginner, they might look the same. But they are not. The difference changes how you should read the chart, how you time your entry, and what risks you are signing up for.

This is not financial advice. It's education. Memecoins are extremely high risk, and most go to zero. Knowing what you are buying is the first line of defense.

What Is a Launchpad Token?

A launchpad token is one that starts its life on a bonding-curve platform. On Solana, the big one is Pump.fun. On EVM chains, you get similar tools. The idea is simple: anyone can create a token in seconds. There is no real vetting. The token starts with a tiny liquidity pool, and the price is set by a curve—the more people buy, the higher the price goes.

Here is the key mechanic: the token only gets its first real liquidity pool on a DEX once it reaches a certain market cap. On Pump.fun, that threshold is around $69k. When that happens, a portion of the pool is burned and the rest is locked into Raydium. That event is called graduation.

Until graduation, the token is basically a project in a test tube. It can't be sold on a real DEX. It lives and dies inside the launchpad. If it never graduates, you can still sell, but only through the launchpad's own interface. And if the curve collapses, you might be left holding nothing.

What Is a Migrated or DEX Token?

A migrated token is one that has already graduated. It has a live liquidity pool on a DEX. That pool is supposed to be locked, which means the creator can't just pull all the money out. The token now trades like a normal (if sketchy) crypto asset. You can buy and sell it on an exchange like Raydium or Uniswap.

But don't mistake "migrated" for "safe." It just means the token has passed one milestone. There are plenty of ways to get rugged after migration. The liquidity can be unlocked if the lock is fake. The team can dump their allocations. The project can die from lack of interest. Graduation is not a seal of approval.

The Real Differences, Side by Side

  • Liquidity: Launchpad tokens have a small, curve-based pool. Migrated tokens have a bigger, DEX-based pool, usually locked.
  • Trading venue: Launchpad tokens trade only on the launchpad until graduation. Migrated tokens trade on DEXs like Raydium.
  • Risk profile: Launchpad tokens are more volatile and more likely to die pre-graduation. Migrated tokens still carry rug risk, but the mechanics are different.
  • Chart reading: On launchpad, you watch the curve and the race to graduation. On DEX, you watch volume, liquidity, and holder behavior.
  • Slippage: Launchpad buys can have brutal slippage because the pool is tiny. DEX tokens usually have deeper pools, but low-liquidity ones can still wreck you.

Why This Matters for Newbies

Most new traders get burned because they don't know which phase they are looking at. They see a token pumping on a DEX and think it's the same as one that just launched. It's not.

If you buy a launchpad token that never graduates, you are stuck in a dead project. If you buy a migrated token with fake liquidity, you can get rugged in seconds. Neither is a safe bet. But knowing which one you're in helps you set expectations.

Also, the tools you use matter. When you're tracking a token, use a proper charting platform. I prefer GMGN—it's honest, fast, and gives you clean data on both launchpad and DEX tokens. Check the token's page on GMGN to see if it's still on the launchpad or already migrated.

The Bottom Line

A launchpad token is a pre-DEX bet. A migrated token is a post-DEX bet. One is a race to graduation. The other is a test of survival. As a beginner, you should know which one you're holding before you even think about size.

And remember: this is gambling with extra steps. Most memecoins go to zero. The only way to not get wiped out is to learn the mechanics first. That's the whole point of DYOR Academy.
