Launchpad Token vs. Migrated DEX Token: What Beginners Actually Need to Know
Learn the real difference between launchpad tokens and migrated DEX tokens, and why it matters for your safety in memecoins.
The Two Paths a Memecoin Can Take
If you're new to memecoins, you'll hear two phrases over and over: launchpad token and migrated/DEX token. They sound similar, but they're completely different animals. Mixing them up can cost you money. Let's break it down without the fluff.
Launchpad Tokens: Born on a Platform
A launchpad token is created and traded directly on a platform like Pump.fun (Solana) or Four.Meme (BSC). The token lives entirely on that platform's internal order book. It hasn't hit a real decentralized exchange (DEX) yet.
Key traits:
- Liquidity is held by the platform, not a traditional liquidity pool.
- No real DEX pair yet, so you can't trade it on GMGN or any other aggregator.
- Graduation threshold: If the token reaches a certain market cap (often around $69k on Pump.fun), it "graduates" and migrates to a DEX like Raydium or PancakeSwap.
- Rug risk is lower in the sense that the platform holds the liquidity, but scams still happen through devs dumping their supply.
Migrated DEX Tokens: The Real Deal (Sort Of)
A migrated token is one that has left the launchpad and now trades on a real DEX. This is what you see on GMGN when you filter for "graduated" tokens. The token now has a liquidity pool, an actual price chart, and can be traded by anyone.
Key traits:
- Liquidity is in a pool, often locked or burned, but not always.
- Trading is open — no more platform restrictions.
- More tools available: you can see holder distribution, dev holdings, and buy/sell pressure on GMGN.
- Risk shifts: Now the danger is from rug pulls (devs pulling liquidity), honeypots (you can buy but not sell), and dumps by early holders.
Why the Difference Matters for You
As a beginner, you need to know which type you're dealing with because the risks are different.
- Launchpad tokens are more volatile and can go to zero in minutes. They're often pumped by bots and then dumped. The platform's graduation mechanism is a double-edged sword: it can give a token legitimacy, but it also creates a "pump to graduate" game that manipulators play.
- Migrated tokens are more stable in the sense that they have a real market, but they're still memecoins. Most of them die quickly. The liquidity might be locked, but the devs can still hold a huge supply and dump on you.
Bottom line: Neither is "safe." Both are high risk. The difference is the kind of risk you're taking.
How to Check Which One You're Looking At
On GMGN, the token page will clearly show if it's still on the launchpad or if it has migrated. Look for the "graduated" badge or check the liquidity pool section. If you see a DEX pair like Raydium or PancakeSwap, it's migrated. If it says "Pump.fun" or "Four.Meme" with no DEX pair, it's still a launchpad token.
Always check the contract address and verify it on the chain explorer. Scammers create fake tokens that look identical to real ones.

Final Word
Understanding the difference between launchpad and migrated tokens is step one in protecting yourself. Step two is accepting that most memecoins go to zero. No amount of research changes that. Your job is to manage risk, not to find the next 100x.
Stay sharp, keep learning, and never invest more than you can afford to lose.
