From Launch to Dust: The Five Stages Every Memecoin Walks Through

A cold-eyed map of the memecoin lifecycle — launch, curve, migration, distribution, and the fade — so you know which stage you're buying.

Every Coin Has a Clock

Most memecoins die. That's not pessimism, that's the base rate. The ones that don't die still go through recognizable phases, and the single biggest edge you can give yourself is knowing which phase you're looking at. Not predicting price — reading structure. This is a map, not a signal. Nothing here is financial advice.

Stage 1: Launch and the Curve

A coin is created, liquidity seeds, and it starts trading on a bonding curve or an early pool. This is the wildest, thinnest, most manipulated stage. Supply is concentrated, the chart is a rumour, and the people buying already know more than you do.

What to actually check:

  • Holder concentration. One wallet or a linked cluster holding the float is a loaded gun pointed at your entry.
  • Liquidity depth. Thin liquidity means your exit is a rumour too.
  • Dev and deployer history. Fresh wallet with no track record is not a red flag by itself — it's an unknown, and unknowns cost money.

This stage rewards speed and punishes conviction. Treat it as a lottery ticket you can afford to lose, because most of these never leave the curve.

Stage 2: The Grind on the Curve

Between launch and migration, a coin has to hold attention long enough to fill. Most don't. The curve grind is where you see the first real tells: does volume persist when the initial hype wallets leave, or does it collapse the moment the first big seller takes profit?

A coin that fills its curve on organic, repeat buying is showing you something. A coin that fills because a handful of wallets kept recycling the same liquidity is showing you something else. Learn to tell the difference. Our metrics reference at /v2/dyor/reference.html#metrics breaks down the numbers worth watching — holder growth, buy/sell balance, liquidity behaviour.

Stage 3: Migration

Migration to a proper DEX pool is a genuine milestone and a genuine trap. It gives the coin real liquidity and a wider audience — and it hands early holders a clean exit. The migration candle is often the loudest moment and the worst entry.

What migration actually changes:

  • Liquidity gets deeper — but so does the size of sellers who can now exit.
  • Attention spikes — and so does the number of people telling you to buy.
  • The story gets tested — a coin with no reason to exist past the migration usually fades fast.

If you're buying the migration, you're buying other people's exit. Sometimes that works. Often it doesn't. Size accordingly.

Stage 4: Distribution and the Second Wind

Some coins survive migration and enter distribution — a period of choppy, sideways-to-up price action where early holders quietly sell into new buyers. This is where the narrative either matures or rots. Community, culture, and actual staying power matter here. A coin with a real reason to keep existing can grind through distribution; one that was only ever a ticker does not.

The tell is simple: when the price stops going up, does the community still show up? If the answer is no, you're watching the fade begin.

Stage 5: The Fade

The fade is quiet. Volume dries up, liquidity thins, holders drift away, and the chart becomes a slow bleed punctuated by dead-cat bounces that lure in one more round of buyers. This is where most of the money is lost — not in the launch, but in people refusing to accept the launch is over.

How to spot it:

  • Volume decline on green candles, not just red.
  • Holder count flat or falling while price bounces.
  • Liquidity slowly removed by wallets that were there at the start.

When a coin is fading, the honest move is to stop looking for a reason it should come back. It might. Most don't. Memecoins are extremely high risk and the majority go to zero — the fade is what that looks like in real time.

Reading the Room, Not the Hype

The lifecycle isn't a rule, it's a pattern. Coins skip stages, reverse, and surprise you. But if you can place a coin on this map — curve, migration, distribution, fade — you stop buying blind. You start asking which stage you're in, who's selling to you, and what would have to be true for the trade to work.

If you want to watch these stages play out in real time alongside other traders, the public groups are the place to be: BH GMGN CHAT for cross-chain talk, and the chain-specific rooms — BH GMGN SOLANA, BH GMGN BSC, BH GMGN ROBINHOOD, BH GMGN BASE.
