Buy Pressure vs Sell Pressure: The First Chart Skill You Actually Need
Buys and sells tell different stories. Here is how a beginner reads pressure on a memecoin chart without getting fooled.
Two Numbers That Look The Same But Aren't
Open any memecoin chart on GMGN and you will see buys and sells. Green side, red side. Most beginners treat them like a scoreboard: more buys equals good, more sells equals bad.
That shortcut will cost you money. Buy and sell pressure are not a scoreboard. They are a story about who is still holding the bag and who is quietly handing it off.
This is not financial advice. Memecoins are extremely high risk and most of them go to zero. What follows is a reading skill, nothing more.
What Buy and Sell Volume Actually Measures
Every trade has two sides. Someone bought, someone sold. So when a chart says 400 buys and 120 sells, it does not mean 400 people bought and 120 people sold. It means 400 separate transactions were initiated by a buyer, and 120 were initiated by a seller.
That distinction matters because transaction count and transaction size are different signals:
- Many small buys, few large sells — looks bullish on count, but the sellers are bigger. One whale exiting can eat fifty excited newcomers.
- Few large buys, many small sells — looks weak on count, but the buys are concentrated. That can be a single wallet loading up, which is a different risk entirely.
- Count and size moving together — buys rising in both number and average size is the only version of "buy pressure" worth respecting.
The Three Questions to Ask in Order
One: is buy pressure growing or just noisy? A spike of buys in one candle is not pressure. Pressure is a trend across several candles. If buys keep outpacing sells while price grinds sideways, someone is absorbing supply. If buys spike and price stalls anyway, the supply is bigger than the demand.
Two: who is on the sell side? Sellers are not all equal. A dev wallet, a sniper from block one, and a random trader taking profit are three completely different events. Before you read any pressure, check holder concentration. If a handful of wallets hold most of the supply, the sell side is a cliff waiting to happen.
Three: is the volume real? Wash trading exists. A wallet buying and selling to itself creates buy and sell volume that means nothing. Look for many distinct wallets, not one wallet doing laps. If the same few addresses keep appearing on both sides, the pressure is theatre.
Where Beginners Get Cooked
- Reading the ratio, ignoring the wallet. 90 percent buys means nothing if the 10 percent sells came from the deployer.
- Trusting a green candle. Price up does not mean healthy. Thin liquidity means small buys move price a lot, then a single sell wipes the whole move.
- Confusing activity with demand. High volume can be churn, not conviction. Busy is not the same as strong.
- Forgetting liquidity. Pressure is meaningless if there is no depth to trade into. Check the pool before you check the vibes.
Build the Habit, Not the Hunch
Pressure reading is a checklist, not a feeling. Buys versus sells, size versus count, who holds what, and whether the wallets are real. Run those four checks every time and you will skip most of the traps that catch people who trade on colour alone.
If you want the underlying definitions — what the numbers mean, how the metrics are calculated — keep our metrics reference open while you practise. For a simple ruleset on how to act on what you read, see rules.
Practise Somewhere Real
You can only learn this by looking at live charts, not screenshots. Open a token on GMGN and read the buy and sell side before you look at anything else. The mirror at gmgn.fr works the same way if you prefer.
If you want to watch how pressure behaves across chains in real time, the public groups are free to join: BH GMGN CHAT @gmgnx_chat for general talk, plus chain rooms — SOL, BSC, ETH, BASE and ROBINHOOD. Alerts and signal channels are listed in the channel directory, and you can pull them all into one folder here. Alerts show you what happened. They do not tell you what it means — that part is still on you.
The Uncomfortable Truth
Buy pressure can be manufactured. Sell pressure can be hidden. Charts can be decorated for people exactly like you. The skill is not spotting green — it is asking who benefits if you believe the green.
Most memecoins go to zero. No chart-reading skill changes that. It only changes how often you are the last one holding.
Learn the pressure. Respect the risk. Do your own research.
